Steal from HJ
Steal from HJ
Term: Steal from HJ An action in the hijack position HJ where the player raises with a wider range, leveraging positional advantage to directly win the blinds and antes.
Term Article: Steal from HJ
Concept
The HJ (Hijack) is the second position after UTG in a full-ring table, i.e., UTG+1. Because it is relatively close to the button, HJ is generally considered a favorable position. Stealing refers to a player raising preflop with a wider range than the standard raising range, with the goal of forcing the blinds and subsequent players to fold, thereby taking the dead money in the pot directly.
Strategy Points
- Range Selection: The HJ stealing range typically includes medium-high suited connectors, small pairs, weak aces, and some suited gappers. The exact range depends on the blind players' styles and stack depths.
- Raise Size: The standard steal raise size is about 2.5-3 big blinds (BB), but should be adjusted based on table dynamics. If the blinds defend loosely, raise slightly larger.
- Position Advantage: HJ maintains a positional advantage over the blinds postflop. Even if called, you can use postflop skills to contest the pot.
Success Factors
Steal success rate is mainly influenced by:
- Blind Players' Styles: If the blinds have a high fold-to-steal percentage (FTS > 70%), stealing is profitable. Conversely, if they defend frequently (3-bet or call), tighten your range.
- Stack Depth: In deep stacks (>100 BB), blinds are more likely to defend with speculative hands, so steal with quality hands. In short stacks (<30 BB), you can widen your stealing range.
- Ante: In games with antes, there is more dead money in the pot, increasing the expected value of stealing.
Example
Assume blinds 100/200, ante 25, 9-handed. HJ player holds A♠5♠. All earlier players fold. If the blinds have a high fold rate, raise to 500 to attempt to steal the 375 dead money (200+100+75). If called, you still have position postflop.
Notes
- Avoid over-stealing, especially when the blinds have noticed your aggression and are adjusting.
- When facing a 3-bet, decide whether to continue based on the opponent's range. Typically, defend with some strong hands and suited connectors, and fold the rest.
- Stealing is an important part of a balanced tight-aggressive strategy, but it must be used in conjunction with your overall approach.
