UTG+1 30bb Resteal

UTG+1 30bb Resteal

In poker cash games or tournaments, when a player in the UTG+1 position holds about 30 big blinds, they counter the open-raise steal from an earlier position usually UTG by re-raising 3-bet.

Overview

A resteal is a common aggressive strategy in Texas Hold'em where a player, suspecting that an opponent in an earlier position is using positional advantage to steal the blinds, re-raises (3-bets) to reclaim the pot. The UTG+1 30bb Resteal specifically refers to a resteal scenario when a player is in the UTG+1 position (one off the gun) with a stack depth of approximately 30 big blinds (BB), targeting a steal raise from the UTG position.

Significance of Position and Stack Depth

  • UTG+1 Position: Directly after UTG (under the gun), this is an early position but slightly better than UTG because the player has observed UTG's action. UTG's raising range is typically strong, but if the player believes UTG's range is widened due to position (e.g., at high blind levels), a resteal becomes viable.
  • 30BB Stack Depth: This is a medium-shallow stack, suitable for shoving or making a large 3-bet. At 30BB, a resteal 3-bet typically reaches 8-10BB. If faced with a 4-bet, the player may consider shoving because the remaining stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) is low.

Core Principle of Resteal

The resteal exploits the expectation of an opponent's fold equity. When the UTG player is stealing blinds, they may hold weaker hands (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors) and are often reluctant to commit many chips with medium-strength hands when facing a 3-bet. The UTG+1 player aims to force UTG to fold and win the pot directly. If UTG calls or 4-bets, the UTG+1 player must assess whether to continue; typically, with 30BB, they can shove preflop.

Typical Range and Examples

  • Resteal Range: Typically includes medium pairs (77-TT), some suited connectors (e.g., A2s-A5s, KQs), and some weak AX hands. These hands have good blocking effects (blocking opponents' strong hands) and playability postflop.
  • Example: Blinds 100/200, UTG+1 stack 6000 (30BB), UTG raises to 500. UTG+1 holds 99 and chooses to 3-bet to 1800. If UTG folds, UTG+1 wins the pot (total 700). If UTG 4-bets all-in, UTG+1 decides whether to call based on opponent's range. Typically, 99 at 30BB depth can call most 4-bets.

Notes

Restealing is not always profitable; it requires considering opponent tendencies: tight-passive players are more likely to fold, while loose-aggressive players may frequently 4-bet. Additionally, avoid excessive restealing to prevent opponents from adjusting their strategy against you.
