UTG 20bb反偷盲(UTG 20bb Resteal)

UTG 20bb Resteal

When holding approximately 20 big blinds in the UTG position, a resteal re-raise against an opponent's raise.

Concept

UTG 20bb Resteal is a strategy in tournaments or deep-stack cash games, specifically when a player is in the under-the-gun position (UTG, the first to act preflop) with a stack of about 20 big blinds (bb), and facing an opponent's raise, chooses to re-take control of the pot by shoving or making a large re-raise.

Background and Motivation

  • When a player has around 20bb, they are in a critical range: the stack is insufficient to play comfortably postflop, but not short enough to be forced all-in. At this point, if the UTG player holds a hand with showdown value that is difficult to defend (e.g., medium pairs, suited connectors), facing a raise from a later position, calling could lead to postflop trouble, while folding loses the dead money in the pot.
  • The purpose of Resteal is to exploit the marginal nature of the opponent's raising range. Generally, UTG players have a tight opening range; however, if opponents believe the UTG player will fold more often due to a shorter stack, they may raise with a wider range to steal blinds. In this situation, the UTG player can punish the opponent's loose behavior by restealing.

Execution Points

  • Frequency Selection: Do not overuse. UTG's initial raising range is usually strong, but with a 20bb stack, a player can increase the frequency of 3-bet shoves or large raises, especially when opponents are in the blinds or middle-late position.
  • Hand Selection: Ideal resteal hands include small to medium pairs (e.g., 55-99), suited aces with low kickers (e.g., A5s), suited connectors (e.g., 76s), etc. These hands have some equity against the opponent's calling range and are easy to play postflop. Avoid restealing with junk hands (e.g., 72o) unless the opponent's fold-to-3bet is extremely high.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Target opponents who steal frequently, have high fold-to-3bet rates, or fold too much to 3-bets. Observe the opponent's 4-bet tendency; if the opponent does not fold easily, proceed with caution.

Example

Assume blinds 100/200, ante 25, you are in the big blind with 110bb. UTG player (stack 20bb) raises to 500. You are on the button with AJo. Do you call? Actually, this is from UTG's perspective: UTG has 20bb, and after raising, if called, the postflop SPR (stack-to-pot ratio) is about 1:1, making profitable postflop play difficult. Therefore, UTG often resteals by making a large raise or shoving. In this example, the button is UTG's opponent.

Considerations

  • In tournaments, ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure reduces the attractiveness of restealing, especially near the money bubble or final table.
  • Avoid executing when the stack is below 15bb; at that point, you should shove directly or simply fold more often.
  • If the UTG player's stack exceeds 30bb, they generally prefer to play postflop, and the frequency of restealing decreases.
