UTG 40bb Push Fold

Term: UTG 40bb Push Fold When in the UTG position with an effective stack of about 40 big blinds, adopt an extreme push-or-fold strategy: either shove all-in or fold, without making any raises or calls.

UTG 40bb Push Fold Strategy

Overview

UTG (Under the Gun) 40bb Push Fold is an extreme strategy in Texas Hold'em for a specific position and stack depth. UTG refers to the first player to act preflop, which typically requires stronger starting hands to enter the pot. 40bb (big blinds) represents a medium stack depth—standard raises and calls are still common, but the Push Fold strategy simplifies decisions to either all-in or fold, mainly used to reduce decision complexity or to counter specific opponents and situations.

Strategy Principles

  • Positional Disadvantage: Being UTG means you are always out of position postflop, as later players have more information. Using Push Fold eliminates postflop technical disadvantages and reduces complex decisions.
  • Stack Depth: At 40bb, after a standard raise (e.g., 3bb), if an opponent re-raises, the remaining chips (approx. 37bb) can lead to awkward situations. Going all-in maximizes fold equity or creates favorable equity against weak opponent ranges.
  • Range Construction: A typical all-in range includes strong hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) and some speculative hands (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors) for balance, but adjustments depend on opponents. The folding range consists of weak hands like low unsuited connectors.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Late tournament stages when blinds are rising quickly and opponents are tight-passive—Push Fold can effectively steal blinds.
  • In cash games, if you notice that UTG all-ins frequently get folds from opponents, it can be used temporarily.
  • As a balancing strategy: occasional use prevents opponents from easily exploiting you.

Risks and Limitations

  • Overuse allows opponents to adjust by calling with wider ranges, leading to frequent call-downs that put your all-in at a disadvantage.
  • At 40bb depth, if opponents call with correct ranges, the expected value of an all-in may be lower than that of a standard raise.
  • Requires precise opponent modeling: effective against tight-passive players but can be exploited by loose-aggressive opponents.
