UTG on Dry Board
Refers to the strategy and action tendencies of a player in the UTG under the gun position facing a dry board on the flop.
Position and Board Characteristics
[UTG] (Under the Gun) is the first to act preflop and is typically in an unfavorable position postflop. A [dry board] is a board structure that makes it difficult to form strong draws, such as a rainbow board (no flush possible) with no straight draws (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow), or only very weak draws.
Strategic Logic
On a dry board, the UTG player usually holds a range advantage — because the preflop raising range contains more high pairs and high cards, while dry boards rarely hit the opponent's wider range. Therefore, UTG players often employ a high-frequency continuation bet (C-Bet) strategy to represent a strong hand and force folds.
Typical Play
- [Continuation Bet Range]: All strong made hands (top pair or better), some medium hands (e.g., middle pair), and even some completely missed hands (e.g., A-high) can be bet to balance the range.
- [Bet Sizing]: Typically small (about 1/3 to 1/2 pot), because dry boards give opponents few draws, so a small bet is sufficient to achieve fold equity.
- Checking Range: A few very strong hands (e.g., sets) or very weak hands (e.g., bottom pair with no draw) can be checked to protect the checking range.
Considerations
UTG's continuation bets on dry boards can be easily exploited by experienced opponents, who may raise to probe or steal the pot. So it is necessary to mix in [check-raise] or [check-call] strategies to avoid being overly exploited. Additionally, opponents' calling ranges on dry boards tend to be strong, so bet frequencies should be adjusted on later streets (turn and river).
