Position and Range
UTG (Under the Gun) is the first to act preflop, and its range is typically tight, containing strong hands and some playable hands. In a Single Raised Pot, only one raise occurs preflop (e.g., UTG raises, several players call), the pot size is medium, and no player re-raises postflop.
River Strategy
On the river, UTG acts first, facing a positional disadvantage: subsequent players can react based on UTG's action. UTG must carefully consider its betting range, balancing value bets and bluffs.
- Value Bet: When UTG holds a strong made hand (such as top pair or better, or a straight or flush), it should bet to extract value, especially against players who may hold second-best hands.
- Bluff: Since UTG's range is relatively clear preflop, river bluffs require selecting appropriate blockers, such as holding cards that block an opponent's flush or straight.
- Check: On unfavorable board textures or when the opponent's range is strong, UTG may consider checking, then deciding based on the opponent's action (e.g., check-call or check-raise).
Typical Scenario Example
Suppose UTG raises preflop, the CO and big blind call. On the flop (e.g., T♠9♠2♦), UTG continuation bets, both call. On the turn (e.g., 3♠), everyone checks. On the river (e.g., A♦) with no draw completing. If UTG holds AK (top pair top kicker), it can bet 1/2 to 2/3 pot; if holding AQ but suspects the opponent may have AT or weaker, it can check-call; if holding K♠Q♠ (missed), it can consider a bluff bet, blocking potential flush draws.
Key Considerations
- Single Raised Pot implies a wider preflop range (compared to 3-bet pots), making river range inference more difficult.
- UTG's positional disadvantage requires more cautious betting frequency to avoid being exploited by opponents (e.g., bluff-raises).
- Analyze opponent types: against tight opponents, UTG can increase checking frequency; against loose opponents, it can value bet more aggressively.
