UTG Turn Multiway Pot

Refers to a multiway pot situation on the turn after entering from UTG preflop, with multiple players participating on the flop.

Position and Scenario

UTG (Under the Gun) is the first to act preflop and typically has a tighter range. When the UTG player raises or calls preflop, and at least three players (including UTG) see the flop without anyone folding, the turn creates a multiway pot (Multiway Pot).

Key Strategy Points

  • Range Weighting: UTG holds a stronger range preflop (e.g., high pairs, big broadway cards, suited connectors), but after entering a multiway pot, opponents' ranges may include more draws and made hands, requiring reassessment.
  • Position Disadvantage: On the turn, UTG is first to act, lacking information and vulnerable to opponents' raises or bluffs.
  • Pot Control: In a multiway pot, UTG should focus on pot control and avoid over-aggression. Medium-strength hands (e.g., top pair with weak kicker) are better suited for check-call rather than leading out.
  • Drawing Hands: With nut draws (e.g., open-ended straight draws or flush draws), consider betting as a semi-bluff, but be aware of the likelihood that opponents hold made hands.
  • Fold Equity: UTG's fold equity is generally lower in multiway pots, especially when the turn card makes the board dangerous (e.g., completing a straight or flush).

Typical Example

UTG raises with A♠K♠, and the button and small blind call. Flop: K♣9♦4♠, all three check. Turn: 8♥, UTG has top pair top kicker, but the pot is three-way. UTG checks, the button bets, and the small blind folds. UTG should consider calling, as the button could hold KQ, KT, or a draw.

Notes

In multiway pots, UTG's profit mainly comes from balancing value bets and bluffs, but must closely monitor opponents' tendencies. If the flop already saw aggressive action, be even more cautious on the turn.
