WSD from BTN

WSD from BTN

Button position showdown rate WSD from BTN: The frequency with which a player in the button position goes to showdown after entering the flop and reveals their hand.

Overview

WSD from BTN (Went to Showdown from Button) is an indicator in poker data analysis used to evaluate a player's showdown tendency in the button position. It measures the proportion of times a player, when on the button, goes to showdown (i.e., shows their hand) from the flop through the river. This metric is typically expressed as a percentage, calculated as: number of showdowns from the button ÷ number of times the flop was seen from the button × 100%.

Meaning and Usage

The button is the most advantageous position in Texas Hold'em, offering positional advantage (acting last). Therefore, players on the button often have wider ranges and more bluffing opportunities. WSD from BTN can be used to analyze whether a player in the button position goes to showdown too often (high frequency, possibly value-betting or calling too much) or too rarely (frequently folding, bluffing excessively).

  • High WSD from BTN (e.g., above 40%): Indicates the button player tends to show down with strong hands or calls too much. Could be a solid player, but may lack bluffs.
  • Low WSD from BTN (e.g., below 25%): Indicates the player folds frequently, possibly using many bluffs or semi-bluffs, or often giving up pots post-flop. Could be an aggressive player, but also prone to over-bluffing.

Notes

  • WSD from BTN should be interpreted in combination with other data (such as VPIP, PFR, AF, etc.); a single metric has limitations.
  • Sample size must be sufficiently large (typically at least a few hundred hands) for statistical significance.
  • Reasonable ranges vary by game type (cash games vs. tournaments) and opponent type.
  • This metric does not distinguish the strength of hands shown down, so a high WSD could result from either strong or weak hands going to showdown.

Application Example

Suppose a player sees the flop 100 times from the button and goes to showdown 30 times; then their WSD from BTN is 30%. If their VPIP is 40% and PFR is 25%, it can be inferred that the player is relatively active on the button and has a moderate showdown frequency. If another player has a WSD from BTN of 50%, it may indicate they tend to reach showdown often post-flop, making them exploitable.
