Devan Tang

Devan Tang, a poker professional from Hong Kong, began his tournament career in the early 2010s. His first major result came in 2012 at the APT Philippines Manila Millions, where he finished second in Event 4 – No-Limit Hold'em for $998,589. This early success set the stage for a career focused on high-stakes and short-deck poker. Over the years, Tang has accumulated 22 recorded in-the-money finishes and four tournament wins, with total live earnings of $6,487,050 as of early 2023. He is also recognized for his short-deck expertise, ranking among the top all-time earners in that variant.

Tang's most notable cash from a traditional hold'em event came at the 2016 WPT National Philippines in Manila. He placed third in the $200,000 No-Limit Hold'em event, winning $1,405,500 – his largest single prize. He also finished second in the 2013 APPT Special Event – ACOP Macau Main Event, earning $473,161. In the 2018 Triton Super High Roller Series, he placed ninth in a HK$1,000,000 No-Limit Hold'em Short Deck Ante-Only event for $365,300, and in 2019, he added a sixth-place finish in a €20,000 Short Deck event at Triton Madrid for $83,265, and a 12th-place finish in a £25,000 Short Deck event at Triton London for $56,730.

Tang is particularly well-known for his performance in the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series. His biggest triumph came in March 2019 at the Triton Poker Series Jeju. In Event #2, a HKD 500,000 No-Limit Hold'em Short Deck Ante-Only tournament, Tang defeated a field of 69 entries to win HKD 9.7 million ($1,264,900). He outlasted Canadian Peter Jetten (2nd place, HKD 7.04 million) and Romain Arnaud (3rd, HKD 4.54 million), with Triton Ambassador Jason Koon finishing fourth. Tang acknowledged his luck during the run, saying, "I got very lucky. I was lucky the whole way. When you're playing this big and you make the final table, you have to play your best for sure." This victory cemented his position as one of the highest-earning Chinese players at the time and placed him second on the all-time short-deck money list behind Jason Koon.

Tang also cashed in other Triton stops, including a ninth-place finish in the 2019 HKD 1,000,000 Short Deck event in Jeju for $286,000, and cashes in Madrid and London. His short-deck skills have made him a regular fixture at these high-stakes events.

Tang continued to perform in the post-pandemic era. In May 2022, he finished sixth in the €20,000 No-Limit Hold'em Short Deck Ante Only at Triton Madrid, earning $83,265. Then in January 2023, he took down the RM5,000 No-Limit Hold'em event at the Poker Dream Malaysia festival, winning $123,420 and adding a fourth career win. These results demonstrate that Tang remains competitive against tough international fields.

Devan Tang is often described as a patient and technically skilled player who excels in post-flop situations. He is known for adapting to his opponents' tendencies, particularly in short-deck formats where hand values shift dramatically. His calm demeanor at the table has earned him the nickname "Steady Tang" among fans. Tang occasionally shares hand analyses on social media, contributing to poker education in the Asian community. Tang's 2019 Triton Jeju victory garnered widespread coverage, with reports highlighting his extraordinary luck: during the event, he was dealt at least five pocket aces and made a four-of-a-kind. In an interview, Tang remarked, "I got very lucky. I was lucky the whole way." The win was part of the six-event Triton series at Jeju Shinhwa World, a foreigner-only casino in South Korea. This victory further cemented his status as a top short-deck specialist.

As of early 2023, Tang's live tournament earnings exceed $6.4 million, placing him among the top earners from Hong Kong. He holds four career wins and 22 cashes, with his largest prize being $1.4 million from the 2016 WPT National Philippines. Tang is consistently ranked near the top of the all-time short-deck money list, trailing only Jason Koon.
