10bb Bubble Play

In the tournament bubble phase, the special strategies and decision-making methods employed when the stack depth is around 10 big blinds.

Overview

10bb Bubble Play refers to the critical strategy faced by players when their stack size is around 10 big blinds (approximately 10bb) during the tournament bubble period (i.e., just one step away from the money). At this point, the pressure of ICM (Independent Chip Model) increases significantly. The survival value of a short stack outweighs the expectation of accumulating chips, so conventional preflop ranges and actions need significant adjustments.

Core Strategy

Preflop Ranges

  • All-in and Call Ranges: During the bubble, a 10bb stack is usually short or medium-short. As the aggressor (e.g., on the small blind or button), the shoving range should be wider than normal because of higher fold equity; as the defender (especially on the big blind), the calling range against an all-in should be extremely tight, because busting out means missing the prize money.
  • ICM Impact: During the bubble, the actual cost of losing a chip (in terms of prize expectation) is higher than in normal stages. Therefore, even with a hand that has slightly more than 50% equity, you may choose to fold due to ICM pressure.

Action Advice

  • Aggressive Shoving: Shove from a favorable position (e.g., the button) against the blinds to steal blinds with fold equity. If opponents are concerned about the bubble, fold rates increase significantly.
  • Defensive Range: When facing a small blind shove from the big blind, you should only call with strong hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) and avoid marginal hands.
  • Avoid Marginal Confrontations: Avoid committing many chips postflop with medium-strength hands, as postflop decisions are complex and could cost your tournament life.

Common Mistakes

  • Overly pursuing a double-up: Doubling up at 10bb is tempting, but losing the chance to cash is not worth it.
  • Ignoring opponent types: Tight-passive players (especially short stacks) are more likely to fold, so you can increase stealing frequency; aggressive deep-stacked players may fight back with wide ranges, so be cautious.

Summary

10bb Bubble Play is one of the most tense and ICM-conscious stages in tournaments. The correct strategy relies on a comprehensive judgment of opponents' ranges, your own stack size, and the payout structure. Mastering this strategy can significantly increase your probability of cashing.
