25bb Steal
25bb Steal
An aggressive play when the stack is around 25 big blinds, raising to try to win the blinds and antes directly.
Overview
25bb Steal is a common blind-stealing scenario in Texas Hold'em tournaments. It refers to a player holding approximately 25 big blinds (bb) making a raise from a favorable position or the blinds, forcing later players to fold and thus capturing the blinds and antes. This stack depth sits between deep stacks (40+ bb) and short stacks (under 15 bb), with a strategy that combines flexibility and risk.
Key Strategy Points
- Position Priority: Steals are typically made from late position (CO, BTN), as it allows better control of the pot and faces fewer opponents.
- Raise Sizing: Standard raise is 2-2.5 bb (2 to 2.5 times the big blind), avoiding too small (inviting calls) or too large (revealing hand strength).
- Hand Selection: Usually a wide range (e.g., medium pairs, suited connectors, weak aces) is used to steal the blinds, but the blind players' 3-bet tendencies must be considered.
- Responding to Re-steals: When facing a 3-bet, the main options are shove or fold, as 25bb can withstand the pressure of a 4-bet shove while retaining the fold option to preserve chips.
Example
In the middle of a tournament, blinds are 200/400 with a 50 ante. You are on the BTN with A♠8♣ and a stack of 10,000 (about 25 bb). All players fold to you. You raise to 800 (2 bb). The small blind folds, the big blind folds, and you win the ante + blinds for a total of 1,000 chips. If the big blind 3-bets to 2,000, you may consider folding or shoving depending on the opponent's range.
Notes
- Avoid becoming too predictable with frequent steals; mix in value raises to prevent exploitation.
- Pay attention to table dynamics: tight-passive players are more likely to fold, while loose-aggressive players may fight back.
- Pot odds: The steal needs a success rate of roughly 40% or more to be directly profitable (ignoring implied odds).
