4Bet from UTG
4Bet from UTG
4Bet from UTG Refers to the fourth raise made while in the UTG Under the Gun position pre-flop. It usually indicates holding a very strong hand such as AA, KK and represents an extremely tight range.
Position Definition
UTG (Under the Gun) is the first position to act preflop, located to the left of the big blind. Due to acting first and facing the pressure of raises from multiple opponents behind, the starting hand range from this position is typically the tightest.
Meaning of 4Bet
4Bet refers to the fourth betting action preflop. The typical sequence is: Big Blind (1Bet) → Raise (2Bet) → Re-raise (3Bet) → Re-raise of the re-raise (4Bet). 4Betting from UTG means a player is voluntarily building a large pot from an early position, which usually represents a very strong range.
Strategic Significance
- Hand Strength Requirement: Due to the inherent disadvantage of the UTG position, the 4Bet range usually only includes AA and KK, and occasionally AKs or QQ, depending on opponent tendencies.
- Balance Considerations: In GTO strategy, UTG's 4Bet frequency is extremely low (about 1-2%), and most are value bets, rarely including bluffs. However, when facing aggressive 3-betting opponents, a small number of bluffs (such as A5s) can be added to protect the range.
- Response to Opponents: After a 4Bet from UTG, subsequent players will be cautious about calling because this action is highly intimidating. It usually causes opponents to fold, or if called, the hand goes to the flop, where the UTG player should continue to maintain aggression.
Common Mistakes
- Do not 4Bet with medium-strength hands (such as TT, AQ) from UTG, as this can easily lead to a difficult spot when facing a 5Bet shove.
- Avoid frequent 4Betting in multi-way pots, as the positional disadvantage amplifies the difficulty of subsequent decisions.
Practical Example
Assume blinds 10/20. You (UTG) hold A♠A♣ and raise to 60. BTN 3Bets to 180, you 4Bet to 450. At this point, BTN will usually fold unless holding KK+. Your 4Bet successfully isolates and takes down the pot.
