Add-On Period
Add-On Period
A designated time during a poker tournament, typically at the end of the rebuy period, when players can purchase additional chips for a fixed price regardless of their current stack size.
Overview
In poker tournaments, an Add-On Period is a specific window, usually occurring after the rebuy period ends or at a predetermined break, during which all remaining players have the option to buy extra chips for a set fee. Unlike rebuys, which are only available to players with a stack below a certain threshold (often requiring the player to be at or below the starting stack), add-ons are open to everyone, regardless of chip count.
Typical Structure
Most tournaments structure the add-on as follows: a time limit (e.g., 10–30 minutes) or until a specific break (e.g., end of level 6), during which players can purchase a fixed number of chips (e.g., the starting stack or a predetermined amount) for a fixed price (often the same as the initial buy-in or slightly less). Players may choose to take the add-on or decline; it is not mandatory. The add-on is usually processed at the table or via a designated registration area, and the chips are added to the player's stack immediately or at the next break.
Strategic Considerations
The decision to take an add-on should be based on several factors:
- Stack size vs. tournament structure: Players with a short stack may need the added chips to survive, while those with a large stack might prefer to avoid inflating the prize pool without gaining relative advantage (since buying more chips increases the total chips but doesn’t change the proportion of chips already held). However, in many tournaments, the add-on offers favorable value in terms of cost per chip compared to the initial buy-in.
- Value per chip: Calculate the cost per chip — if the add-on provides more chips per dollar than the original buy-in, it is generally profitable to take it. For example, an initial buy-in of $100 for 10,000 chips yields a cost of $0.01 per chip; an add-on of $50 for 10,000 chips offers $0.005 per chip, which is excellent value.
- Prize pool impact: Add-ons increase the total prize pool, so players who are confident in their edge may want to invest more money to potentially earn a larger share. Conversely, weaker players might skip the add-on to limit their financial exposure.
- Blind levels: If blinds are high relative to stack sizes, the added chips can provide more breathing room and allow for more strategic play.
Example
Consider a $50 buy-in tournament with 10,000 starting chips and a $25 add-on for an additional 10,000 chips available at the end of the rebuy period (levels 1–4). A player who has built their stack to 50,000 chips might still buy the add-on because the chips are cheap ($0.0025 per chip vs $0.005 initially) and can help them dominate even more. A player with 5,000 chips might also buy in to avoid elimination.
Relation to Other Tournament Structures
Add-on periods are common in rebuy tournaments, but some tournaments offer an add-on only (without rebuys) as a way to give everyone a final chance to increase their stack. In freezeout tournaments, there is no add-on option. Add-ons differ from re-entries, which allow players to start a new tournament entry after busting, often during a late registration period.
Summary
The Add-On Period is a player-friendly feature that can improve tournament liquidity and reward those willing to invest more. Smart players evaluate the chip value and their own skill edge before deciding to participate.
