AF from MP stands for Aggression Factor from Middle Position. It is a tracking statistic used in poker HUDs (Heads-Up Displays) to analyze a player's post-flop tendencies when acting from middle position. The aggression factor (AF) itself is calculated as (Bets + Raises) / Calls. A high AF indicates an aggressive player who prefers to bet or raise rather than call, while a low AF suggests a passive player who calls more often.

Middle Position Context

In a standard 9-handed full-ring game, middle position (MP) typically refers to seats 4, 5, and 6 (sometimes including seat 3 in looser definitions). Players in MP have a moderate amount of information: they have seen the actions of early position (EP) players but must still act before late position (LP). The optimal strategy from MP often involves a balanced range of raises and calls, with a tighter range than LP but wider than EP.

Interpreting AF from MP

When evaluating AF from MP, consider sample size. A meaningful sample requires at least 100 hands. For example:

• An AF of 1.0 means the player bets/raises as often as they call.
• An AF above 2.0 is considered aggressive; the player is frequently betting or raising.
• An AF below 0.5 is very passive; the player calls much more than they bet/raise.

Strategic adjustments against different AF from MP values:

• Against high AF (aggressive) players: Play tighter, check-raise with strong hands, and avoid bluff-catching with marginal holdings.
• Against low AF (passive) players: Bet for value more liberally, bluff less, and expect them to call with draws or weak made hands.

AF from MP does not differentiate between street-specific aggression (e.g., flop vs river) nor does it account for bet sizing. It is best used in conjunction with other stats like VPIP, PFR, and WTSD to form a complete picture. Also note that AF can be skewed by very small samples or by players who don't see many flops from MP.
