Auto Rebuy

Overview

Auto Rebuy is a convenience feature available in many online poker rooms and some live cash games. When enabled, the system automatically deducts funds from the player's account to purchase chips whenever their stack drops to zero or below a preset amount (often the minimum or maximum buy-in). This ensures the player always has a full stack without needing to manually click a button each time.

Usage

Auto Rebuy is most common in cash games where players can buy in for a maximum amount. For example, in a $1/$2 No-Limit Hold'em game with a $200 maximum buy-in, a player might set auto rebuy to keep their stack at $200 at all times. If they lose a hand and drop to $50, the system will automatically add $150 (or up to the max) at the next opportunity, usually before the next hand begins. Some platforms allow players to choose a target stack size, while others only rebuy when the stack reaches zero.

In tournaments, auto rebuy is less standard because rebuys are often optional and subject to specific rules (e.g., during a rebuy period). However, some online tournaments offer a feature that automatically rebuys a player when they bust out, until the rebuy period ends. This is sometimes called "auto rebuy" in tournament settings as well, though it's more accurately described as automatic registration for rebuys.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:

• Convenience: Eliminates the need to watch your stack size and manually rebuy, reducing distractions.
• Maintains Maximum Stack: In cash games, always having a full stack allows you to play optimally and not be short-stacked.

Disadvantages:

• Loss of Control: You may automatically rebuy into a bad game or when you intended to leave.
• Potential for Overspending: In tournaments, auto rebuy can lead to excessive spending if you keep rebuying without careful thought.
• Not Ideal for All Strategies: Some players prefer to play short-stacked for tactical reasons, and auto rebuy would override that choice.

Best Practices

• Use auto rebuy only in games where you are comfortable with the stakes and intend to keep playing.
• Set a maximum number of rebuys if the platform offers it (e.g., in tournaments with limited rebuys).
• Be aware that auto rebuy may be disabled during certain periods (e.g., end of rebuy period in tournaments).
