BB 15bb Resteal

bb-15bb-resteal When in the big blind position with an effective stack of about 15 big blinds, a re-raise usually an all-in or a large raise in response to a blind steal attempt from the small blind or other players.

Overview

BB 15bb Resteal is a common aggressive strategy in poker tournaments or deep-stack cash games. When the Big Blind has a stack depth of approximately 15 big blinds (bb), and a player in the Small Blind or early position attempts to steal the blinds by raising, the big blind can choose to re-steal by shoving or making a large raise. This strategy exploits the opponent's tendency to hold marginal hands and avoid risk, making it an effective way for short-stacked players to double up or accumulate chips.

Strategy Principles

  • Stack Depth Impact: With 15bb, the stack is short or mid-short, limiting the big blind's decision space. Typically, the re-steal raise size is an all-in or a raise to about 3-4 times the initial raise to apply pressure.
  • Opponent Range: The Steal raiser (e.g., small blind) usually has a wide range including weak and medium hands. The big blind's re-steal range should include strong hands (e.g., pairs, high cards) and some weak hands for balance (e.g., low suited connectors).
  • Fold Equity: The key to a successful re-steal is forcing the opponent to fold. Facing a 15bb shove, the opponent needs to call about 12-13bb to contest the pot (Dead Money + opponent's 15bb), with Pot Odds around 1:1.3. However, the opponent must also consider ICM Pressure. Thus, the big blind's all-in has high fold equity.

Key Execution Points

  • Avoid Overuse: Frequent re-steals can be exploited by experienced opponents who may flat or re-raise with strong hands.
  • Opponent Tendencies: More effective against aggressive players who steal often; reduce re-steals against tight-passive players.
  • Position Factor: This strategy is only available from the big blind, as the big blind has already invested 1bb and acts last.

Example

In a tournament with blinds 500/1000, the big blind has 15,000 chips (15bb). The Small Blind (25,000 chips) raises to 2,500 from the button. If the big blind holds a hand like A8o or 55, they can consider shoving 15,000, forcing the small blind to fold weak hands like K7s.

Summary

BB 15bb Resteal is a key weapon for short-stacked players to regain aggression, leveraging stack pressure. It must be used carefully, incorporating opponent reads and timing.
