BTN 10bb Defense
BTN 10bb Defense
The strategic consideration and action of defending the big blind against a button open raise when the effective stack size is 10 big blinds.
Overview
BTN 10bb Defense refers to the optimal strategy for a player in the big blind (BB) when facing a raise from the button (BTN) with an effective stack of 10 big blinds (bb). This scenario is common in tournament play, especially near the bubble or in short-stacked situations, and also in cash games when players buy in short or lose chips. The key challenge is to devise a profitable defense range given the shallow stack depth, where post-flop play is limited and decisions often boil down to all-in or fold.
Strategic Considerations
At 10bb effective, the button open-raise range typically widens because the short stack incentivizes stealing blinds. Common BTN opening ranges at 10bb might include any pair, any ace, suited connectors, and some broadways. The BB, facing a raise, must decide which hands to defend by calling or shoving, and which to fold. Calling is often disadvantageous because the pot is small relative to remaining stacks, and the BB is out of position. Therefore, the primary defense is through re-raising all-in (a “jam”) to apply maximum pressure and realize equity without playing a flop.
Range Construction
A typical 10bb defense range in the BB vs a BTN open (e.g., to 2-2.5bb) might include:
- Strong value hands: All pairs, especially those that can call a shove from BTN (e.g., 66+).
- High equity draws: Ace-x suited, suited connectors (e.g., 76s, 87s, 98s) that have good playability but are often better as jam hands than calls.
- Weak aces and broadways: Some A-rag offsuit and K-x suited may be jammed or folded depending on opponent tendencies.
Specifically, many solver-based strategies suggest jamming with hands that have at least 40-45% equity against the BTN’s calling range (which itself is typically strong, e.g., TT+, AJ+, KQ). Hands with lower equity, like 72o, are folded. The exact range varies based on the BTN opening size and antes.
Example Scenario
If the BTN opens to 2bb with 10bb effective, the BB can jam for 10bb total. The BTN must call with a range that prevents the BB from profitably jamming too wide. A common BTN calling range might be 88+, AT+, KQ. Against that, the BB’s jam range could be all pairs, A2s+, K9s+, Q9s+, JT+, and some suited connectors—approximately 25-30% of hands. Adjustments are made based on the BTN’s fold-to-jam frequency.
Practical Tips
- Do not flat call often: Out of position with a short stack makes calling unattractive. Only call with very strong hands (e.g., JJ+) to trap or with hands that play well against a continuation bet.
- Adjust to opponent: If the BTN folds too much, widen your jam range. If they call too wide, tighten to hands that perform well against their loose calling range.
- Consider ICM in tournaments: In pay jump situations, you may need to be tighter due to survival value.
