BTN 15bb 3-Bet Jam
When a player is on the button with 15 big blinds and faces an opponent's open-raise, they choose to go all-in as a 3-bet.
Overview
BTN 15bb 3-Bet Jam is a common short-stack strategy, often seen in late tournament stages or deep-stack cash games when short-stacked. The core idea is to leverage positional advantage and fold equity from the all-in to either take down the pot preflop or go to showdown.
Applicable Scenarios
- Stack Depth: Approximately 15 big blinds, which falls into the short-stack range; the all-in is large enough to threaten the pot.
- Position: The Button (BTN) is the best postflop position; after an all-in, opponents must consider that they cannot play postflop.
- Opponent Range: Typically aimed at raisers from earlier positions, especially players who open wide.
Strategic Logic
- Fold Equity: Opponents holding medium-strength hands (e.g., KQ, 99) may fold due to fear of difficult postflop play.
- Win Rate: When jamming 15bb, choose hands that perform well against the opponent’s range, such as A3o, K9s, low to medium pocket pairs, etc. These hands have decent equity against a typical opening range in an all-in preflop scenario.
- Expected Value: By jamming, if the opponent folds, you immediately win the dead money in the pot (about 2.5-3bb). If called, you rely on hand equity to try to double up.
Risks and Adjustments
- Risk: If the opponent’s range is too strong (e.g., consistently calling with AJ+, 99+), the all-in becomes a large-pot coin flip with negative long-term EV.
- Adjustments: Flexibly choose hands based on the opponent’s fold frequency. If the opponent folds very often, widen your jamming range; if not, tighten it.
- ICM Impact: In late tournament stages near the money or final table, be more cautious to avoid elimination from an ill-timed all-in.
Typical Example
In a tournament with blinds 500/1000 and an ante of 100, BTN has 15,000 chips (15bb). The CO raises to 2,200. BTN holds A7o and decides to jam all-in for 15,000. If CO does not have a premium hand, they will likely fold, and BTN safely wins the pot.
