BTN Preflop Iso Pot
BTN Preflop Iso Pot
Term: BTN Preflop Iso Pot Isolating limpers by raising from the button preflop to build a heads-up pot against one or a few opponents.
Concept
BTN Preflop Iso Pot is a pot formed when the button (BTN) makes an isolation raise (iso-raise) against multiple limpers preflop in Texas Hold'em. The core purpose is to reduce the number of players in the pot, thereby leveraging positional advantage to play heads-up against weak players or opponents with wide ranges.
How to Execute
- Identify the Opportunity: When multiple players limp in preflop (typically weak or passive players), the button can consider an isolation raise if holding a playable hand (e.g., pairs, suited connectors, Ax, etc.).
- Raise Sizing: Typical raise sizes are 3-5 times the big blind, depending on the number of limpers and the blind structure. Commonly, raise to 2.5-4 BB plus one additional BB per limper (e.g., with a big blind and two limpers, raise to 3 BB + 2 BB = 5 BB).
- Subsequent Action: After the raise, if only one or two callers remain, use positional advantage postflop to continuation bet or make decisions based on the board texture.
Purpose
- Isolate Weak Players: Push out multiple opponents, leaving only one or a few with weaker ranges, thereby increasing win rate.
- Acquire Pot Equity: Even without hitting the flop, frequent c-bets postflop can often win the pot.
- Accumulate Blinds: If all limpers fold, directly win the dead money (blinds and limping chips) in the pot.
Notes
- Avoid over-isolating when limpers are all tight or aggressive players, as it may invite a 3-bet.
- Be cautious with deep stacks; after isolation, you may face multiple bets, so consider hand strength and opponent tendencies.
- Do not isolate with overly weak hands, as it becomes difficult to realize equity postflop.
Typical Scenario Example
Assume blinds 1/2, one player limps, and the button holds A♥5♥. Raise to 8 (4 BB). If the big blind folds and the limper calls, a 4 BB BTN Preflop Iso Pot is formed. Postflop, against a weak opponent, a continuation bet is often profitable.
