CO 10bb Open Jam

Term queue-en: co-10bb-open-jam The strategy of directly going all-in from the cutoff CO when the stack depth is about 10 big blinds.

Overview

CO 10bb Open Jam is an aggressive opening strategy in Texas Hold'em when playing a short stack (around 10 big blinds). The player in the Cutoff position (after UTG and before the button) moves all-in directly, aiming to win the pot through pressure while avoiding complex post-flop situations that could arise from being re-raised.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Stack depth around 8-12 big blinds, typically optimal at 10bb.
  • In the Cutoff position, with the button and blinds still to act.
  • Late tournament stage, high blind level, moderate ICM pressure.

Strategic Principle

When the stack shrinks to around 10bb, a standard raise (e.g., 2-3bb) would commit a significant portion of the stack, and facing a 3-bet would make folding unprofitable or calling marginal. Shoving directly maximizes fold equity, simplifies decision-making, and leverages the positional advantage of the Cutoff—opponents must consider that players behind them are still to act, making them more likely to fold.

Advantages

  • Avoids awkward spots after being 3-bet.
  • Imposes strict requirements on calling ranges; opponents need strong hands to call, increasing the value of folds.
  • When balanced, the range can include both value hands and bluffs.

Disadvantages

  • If overused, opponents may adjust by widening their calling ranges.
  • If called by the blinds, you are often at a disadvantage and may face multi-way pots.
  • Misses opportunities to induce mistakes through smaller raise sizing.

Range Suggestions

A typical range includes: strong pairs (77+), high broadways (AT+), suited connectors (T9s+), etc., with adjustments based on opponent tendencies.
