CO 30bb Defense

CO 30bb Defense

CO 30bb Defense Refers to the defending range and strategy used by a player in the CO position when facing a raise from an earlier position, with a stack depth of approximately 30 big blinds.

Concept

CO (Cut Off, the position to the right of the button) is a key position in Texas Hold'em. With a stack depth of approximately 30 big blinds (bb), the player is in the medium-stack phase and needs to balance offense and defense. CO 30bb Defense refers to the range and counter-strategy when the CO player chooses to call or 3-bet against an raise from an earlier position (e.g., UTG, MP).

Strategic Considerations

  • Position Advantage: The CO has positional advantage (acting last postflop), so it can defend a wider range than the blinds. However, with 30bb being a medium stack, the range should not be too wide to avoid difficult postflop decisions.
  • Calling Range: A typical calling range includes suited connectors, small pairs (22-66), and some suited high cards (e.g., A9s, KTs). These hands are playable and can use position to bluff or value bet postflop.
  • 3-bet Range: Usually 3-bet with value hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) and some bluffing hands (e.g., A5s, A4s, small suited aces). With 30bb, the stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) after 3-betting is low, so bluffing hands must be chosen carefully to avoid being forced into an awkward spot by a 4-bet.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Against tight-aggressive opponents, tighten the defense range; against loose-passive opponents, expand calling and 3-bet frequencies.

Typical Example

Assume the CO holds 30bb and an early-position player raises to 3bb. The CO's calling range may include:

  • Pairs: 22-77 (call), 88+ can 3-bet
  • Suited connectors: JTs, T9s, 98s, etc.
  • Suited aces: A2s-A9s (some 3-bet)
  • Offsuit high cards: KQo, AJo, etc. (some folds or 3-bets)
  • Others: some weak suited K, Q, etc. (depending on opponent)

3-bet range (assuming raise to about 9bb) may include:

Notes

  • At 30bb depth, postflop all-ins are common, so preflop decisions have a significant impact on EV.
  • Avoid calling with hands easily dominated (e.g., KJo) to prevent losing large chips postflop.
  • The defense range should be dynamically adjusted based on the actual opponent and tournament stage (e.g., ICM pressure).
