HJ 150bb Bubble Play

Term: Hijack 150 Big Blind Bubble Play HJ 150bb Bubble Play Refers to the strategy and decision-making principles for a player in the hijack HJ position holding approximately 150 big blinds deep stack during the bubble phase of a tournament.

Overview

HJ 150bb Bubble Play is a typical deep-stacked bubble scenario in tournaments. At this point, the blind level is relatively low (stack depth about 150bb), bubble pressure mainly comes from short-stacked players, while interactions between deep stacks focus more on ICM (Independent Chip Model) value.

Position Characteristics

The Hijack (HJ) is located before the CO (Cutoff), a middle-to-late position but not yet in the button area. During the bubble, since there are still players to act behind (CO, BTN, SB, BB), the HJ's opening range must account for the risk of being restealed.

Strategic Considerations

  • Opening Range: Facing 150bb deep stacks, HJ can slightly widen their opening range, but should be wary of large squeezes from the blinds or players behind. A range of about 20%-25% of hands is typically recommended (e.g., medium pairs, suited connectors, AXs, etc.).
  • Versus Short Stacks: During the bubble, short-stacked players tend to play conservatively. HJ can attack short stacks' blinds with a wider range, but should avoid getting into marginal calls after a short stack shoves.
  • Deep Stack Confrontations: When facing other deep stacks, control the pot size to avoid postflop ICM decisions in large pots. A larger raise size (e.g., 3-4bb) can be used to reduce opponents' calling frequency.
  • Defense and Restealing: If players behind (especially CO/BTN) frequently steal blinds, HJ needs to defend with a strong range and may consider 4betting or reshoving.

Example

Assume the bubble, blinds 500/1000, ante 100, HJ has 150bb (about 150,000 chips). All fold to HJ, who may consider raising to 2.5bb-3bb with hands like AJo, KQs, 77+, etc. If CO or BTN 3bets, decide whether to 4bet or fold based on opponent tendencies.

Summary

The core of HJ 150bb Bubble Play is balancing value extraction with bubble risk. Use the deep stack advantage to apply pressure, while avoiding losing bubble survival edge due to marginal calls or large pot losses.
