HJ 20bb Defense

Term: HJ位20BB防御(HJ 20bb Defense) In Texas Hold'em, the defensive strategy adopted when a player is in the HJ position with an effective stack depth of about 20 big blinds.

Overview

HJ (Hijack) is the position after UTG (Under the Gun) in Texas Hold'em, typically in the middle-late position. When the effective stack depth is approximately 20 big blinds (BB), it falls under the short or medium stack stage. Players need to adjust their opening and defending ranges to avoid committing too many chips and becoming passive.

Strategy Key Points

  • Defense Range: When facing a raise from an earlier position in the HJ seat, defend with a tighter range. For example, against a UTG raise, consider calling or 3-bet shoving with strong hands like TT+, AQ+. When facing a raise from a later position, you can loosen up slightly to include some suited connectors or small pocket pairs to balance your range.
  • Chip Management: At 20BB depth, after a 3-bet, you usually have only one bet or shove remaining. Therefore, a 3-bet often implies an all-in or near all-in. Avoid small raises that give the opponent a chance to call and put you in a tough spot postflop.
  • Postflop Plan: After calling and seeing a flop, handle medium-strength hands cautiously to avoid unnecessary losses. Top pair or draws can consider continuation betting or check-raising, while weak pairs and air often need to be folded.
  • Counter Strategy: Against aggressive opponents, increase the frequency of 3-bet shoves. Against conservative opponents, call more often and steal pots in position.

Notes

  • 20BB is a critical threshold. Below this depth (e.g., 15BB or lower), adopt a shove-or-fold strategy more frequently.
  • Adjust dynamically based on opponent tendencies and tournament stage. Under ICM pressure, play more conservatively.

Typical Example

Assume blind level 200/400 with an effective stack of 8000. HJ holds 88, UTG raises to 1000. In this case, consider calling. If the flop contains high cards, usually fold; if the flop is low, try betting. If holding AA, 3-bet shove directly.
