HJ 25bb Bubble Play

HJ 25bb Bubble Play

HJ 25bb Bubble Strategy

Bubble Phase Background

During the tournament bubble (close to the money but not yet in), ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure increases dramatically. Players tend to tighten their ranges to avoid elimination, but there are also opportunities to exploit the bubble advantage. The HJ (Hijack, UTG+2) position is in the middle-late area, not the earliest nor the latest to act, requiring a balance between stealing blinds and protecting chips.

Stack Depth Impact

25bb is a medium stack, offering some post-flop maneuverability but not enough to withstand heavy losses. The opening range here is typically tighter than in normal phases, though you can raise more against tight-weak players in late position. Suggested preflop ranges include:

  • Value raises: medium pairs (77+), suited connectors (T9s+), A/J+, etc.
  • Blind-stealing raises: adjusted based on small blind and big blind defensive tendencies. If opponents fold frequently, add more weak Aces, suited gappers, etc.

Key Decision Points

  • Facing a 3-bet from late position: With 25bb, a 4-bet shove is usually too risky; fold or call cautiously.
  • Facing blind defense: Post-flop, be mindful of bet sizing; avoid getting into large pots.
  • Leveraging ICM advantage: If the table is generally conservative, increase stealing frequency; if facing aggressive players, tighten up.

Common Mistakes

  • Over-stealing leading to re-raises and losses.
  • Underestimating short stacks' shoving ranges (short stacks are more likely to push all-in with a wide range).
  • Ignoring your own ICM equity, getting into marginal showdowns and busting early.

In summary, this strategy emphasizes balancing risk and reward on the bubble, adjusting to opponents rather than rigidly following a fixed range.
