HJ 50bb Bubble Play

HJ 50bb Bubble Play

HJ 50bb Bubble Play Refers to standard play and decision-making principles when holding approximately 50 big blinds in the HJ position during the tournament bubble phase.

HJ 50bb Bubble Play

Background

The [bubble] period refers to the stage in a tournament where only a few eliminations remain before the money. During this time, players adjust their strategies to avoid elimination, typically preferring to protect their chips. HJ (Hijack) is the UTG+2 position at a nine-handed table, sitting in the late-middle, with some ability to steal blinds and apply pressure. 50BB is a deep stack, allowing for a variety of plays.

Core Strategy

During the bubble, due to [ICM] (Independent Chip Model) pressure, players' fold frequency increases, but deep stacks offset some of the risk. Typical strategies for HJ with 50BB include:

  • Tight-aggressive with a tighter lean: Avoid confrontation with players who have a chip advantage, especially big stacks in the Big Blind.
  • Attack the blinds: Target small stacks (<20BB) in the blinds or players with a high stealing frequency. Use a standard raise (about 2.2-2.5BB) to isolate.
  • Cautious calling: When facing a [3-bet], consider the opponent's range and [ICM]. Generally defend only with strong hands like TT+, AQ+, or fold some marginal hands.
  • Use position: HJ can squeeze the CO or BTN's stealing attempts, but is also vulnerable to attacks from later positions. The raising range can include 22+, [A2s]+, [K9s]+, [QJs]+, but adjust based on table dynamics.

Notes

  • If opponents are generally passive, you can expand your stealing range slightly; if there are aggressive players behind, tighten up.
  • The 50BB depth allows for calling or 3-bet bluffing, but avoid excessive bluffing during the bubble.
  • Estimate opponents' stack sizes and fear indices, and prioritize attacking players with similar or smaller stacks.

Example

In the [bubble] with blinds 500/1000/100 and effective stacks of 50BB. HJ holds A♠8♠ and it folds to you. If BTN and SB are tight players, you can raise to 2200 to attempt a steal; if BTN is a big stack and aggressive, it is advisable to fold.
