HJ Cold Call
HJ Cold Call
Term: Hijack Cold Call HJ Cold Call The action of calling directly when facing a raise from another player while in the hijack HJ position.
Position Background
HJ (Hijack) is the second seat to the right of the button in Texas Hold'em, a position that is middle-late. Since the button and the CO (Cutoff) act after HJ, HJ has some positional advantage, though not as much as the CO or button.
Meaning of Cold Call
Cold Call refers to calling a raise without having any blinds invested or having previously called. Unlike simply "calling a raise," a Cold Call implies the premise of "not yet participating in the current pot." For example, preflop, if UTG raises and HJ calls directly, that is an HJ Cold Call.
Strategic Considerations
- Advantages: HJ has decent position and can observe the reactions of later players (CO, button, blinds). Calling costs less than raising, making it suitable for entering the pot cheaply with playable hands (e.g., small to medium pairs, suited connectors).
- Disadvantages: A Cold Call typically indicates moderate or weak hand strength (strong hands like AA/KK tend to raise or 3-bet), making it susceptible to squeezes or exploitation by later players. Additionally, after a Cold Call, you lack the initiative and are passive postflop.
- Typical Scenarios: When an earlier player (e.g., UTG) raises, HJ holds a medium-strength hand like 99 or AQs and does not want to raise immediately (to avoid isolating themselves or facing a 4-bet), so they Cold Call.
Notes
Frequent HJ Cold Calls may expose your range, allowing opponents to easily deduce your holdings. It is advisable to balance your range by occasionally Cold Calling with strong hands to mislead opponents.
