HJ PFR

HJ PFR

Hijack Pre-Flop Raise HJ PFR The act of raising Raise from the Hijack HJ position before the flop Pre-Flop, typically indicating that the player is entering the pot with a wide range, aiming to steal the blinds or control the table.

Position and Meaning

HJ in PFR refers to the Hijack position, which is the third position from the Under the Gun (UTG) at a full ring (9 players), i.e., UTG+2. From the Big Blind's perspective, the HJ is in a middle-late position, offering relative advantage but not the most favorable. PFR stands for Pre-Flop Raise.

Strategic Significance

HJ PFR typically indicates a player holds a playable hand, with a wider range than UTG but still selective. A typical raising range includes:

Purpose of raising:

  • Value raise: Build the pot with strong hands
  • Semi-bluff: Force blinds to fold with draws or marginal hands
  • Isolation raise: Reduce the number of participants, leverage positional advantage

Subsequent Action Considerations

After HJ PFR, pay attention to reactions from later positions (CO, BTN) and the blinds. If facing a 3bet, HJ should decide to call or fold based on hand strength and opponent tendencies. Generally, HJ has a higher continuation bet frequency against the blinds' defending ranges, but should avoid excessive bluffing.

Common Mistakes

  • Range too wide: In early full ring, the Hijack can still be squeezed by players behind, so avoid raising with very weak hands.
  • Ignoring dynamics: If blinds frequently 3bet, tighten the HJ PFR range.

Typical example: In a NL100 9-handed table, HJ holds A♠K♦ and raises to 3BB, BTN folds, SB folds, BB calls. Flop Q♠J♠2♥, BB checks, HJ continuation bets 2/3 pot.
