HJ River Single Raised Pot

HJ River Single Raised Pot

Refers to the situation where, in a pot that was formed by a single raise no re-raise preflop, a player is in the HJ position hijack on the river.

Position Description

HJ (Hijack) refers to the hijack position, located after UTG (UTG) and before the cutoff (CO). It is a middle-to-late position. In a single raised pot (Single Raised Pot), the preflop action typically consists of the HJ player making the initial raise, or raising after someone limps in front, with no further re-raise.

River Considerations

The river is the final street, where the board is complete. In a single raised pot, the pot is relatively small and players' ranges are wide. A player in the HJ position may be out of position on the river (if not in the pot, no action is needed; but if the HJ is the preflop raiser and in late position, opponents may act first). In practice, if the HJ is the preflop raiser, they are often out of position postflop (unless the button also enters the pot and the HJ acts first), so river decisions must account for the opponent's range, board texture, and bet sizing.

Strategy Points

Generally, on the river in a single raised pot, the HJ player should prioritize balancing value bets and bluffs, while also paying attention to pot odds and opponent types. Given the small pot, overbluffing may not be worthwhile. Common strategies include: betting strong hands for value, check-calling with medium-strength hands, and making small bluffs with specific missed draws.
