HJ Squeeze
Overview
HJ Squeeze is a common aggressive play in Texas Hold'em, usually occurring preflop. The HJ (Hijack) is the position immediately to the right of the UTG (UTG), belonging to the middle-late position. When the HJ player observes that someone in front has raised and one or more players have called, he can choose to make a large re-raise (usually 3-4 times the original raise) to apply pressure on opponents. This play exploits the psychology that opponents' ranges may contain weak or medium hands, attempting to win the pot directly without seeing a flop.
When to Use
- Weak Opponent Range: If the raiser is from early position with a narrow range, but the callers may have medium-strength hands (like small to medium pairs, suited connectors), and the HJ has position advantage and holds a good starting hand (like big pairs, AK, etc.), a squeeze can be executed.
- High Fold Equity: When opponents (especially callers) tend to fold to a large raise, and stack depth allows (usually effective stacks above 30-50 big blinds), the squeeze is most effective.
- Table Image: If the HJ player has shown an aggressive image in previous hands, opponents are more likely to believe his strong range, increasing fold equity.
Risks and Considerations
- Counterplay: If the original raiser or caller holds a strong hand (like QQ+, AK) and chooses to go all-in or re-raise, the HJ's squeeze may be in trouble.
- Range Balance: Using the squeeze too frequently will cause opponents to adjust, so it's necessary to balance the range with other plays (like calling, flatting).
- Position Advantage: The HJ has position postflop, but post-squeeze skill is still needed, otherwise one may lose at showdown.
Typical Example
Assume blinds are 10/20, effective stack 2000. UTG raises to 60, CO calls, HJ with A♠K♠ raises to 240. This action forces UTG and CO to fold, and HJ wins the pot directly. Ideally, opponents' fold rate should be above 60% for this play to be profitable in the long run.
