Middle Position Stealing Range

Middle Position Stealing Range

In Texas Hold'em, the range of starting hands used by a Middle Position MP player to attempt to win the blinds when all players before them have folded.

Principle and Purpose

Steal is an aggressive open-raising strategy in Texas Hold'em that aims to use positional advantage to capture the blinds. The stealing range from Middle Position (MP, typically UTG+1 and UTG+2 on a nine-handed table or the third seat on a six-handed table) is narrower than later positions (CO, BTN) because there are still players yet to act (CO, BTN, SB, BB) who may hold strong hands or fight back.

Typical Range Structure

The Middle Position stealing range usually contains stronger hands to balance the risk of being countered after a successful steal. A typical range includes:

  • All pairs (22+)
  • Most aces with a high kicker (A9s+, ATo+)
  • Some suited connectors (e.g., 67s+, T9s+)
  • Certain high card combinations (KJs+, QJs+)

Note that this is just a baseline range; in actual play, adjustments should be made based on opponent tightness, blind defense tendencies, stack depth, and other factors. For example, against tighter blinds you can loosen up slightly; against looser ones you should tighten up.

Differences from Other Stealing Positions

  • CO (Cutoff): Usually has a wider stealing range and can include more speculative hands (e.g., small suited connectors, gappers).
  • BTN (Button): Has the widest range, leveraging absolute position, and can even include junk hands.
  • Middle Position: With more players left to act, a 3bet or call often leaves you out of position postflop, so the stealing range needs to be more solid.

Risks and Adjustments

The main risk of stealing from Middle Position is facing a 3bet from the blinds or being called and then playing out of position postflop. Therefore, it's recommended to:

  • Avoid stealing with weak hands (e.g., K5o, Q8o) from Middle Position.
  • Against aggressive blinds, increase your 4bet frequency or fold.
  • Pay attention to stack depth: use a tighter range when short-stacked, and a higher continuation bet frequency when deep-stacked.

In summary, the Middle Position stealing range is an important component of a tight-aggressive strategy, requiring flexible application based on position, opponents, and dynamics.
