Under the Gun (UTG) Open-Raising Range

Under the Gun (UTG) Open-Raising Range

The set of hand combinations a player in the earliest position (UTG) uses to raise first when no one has raised before the flop.

Context: Term article: Under the Gun (UTG) Open-Raising Range

Position Characteristics

Under the Gun is the first position to act preflop (typically two seats to the left of the button in a nine-handed game). Since there are still multiple players yet to act and you lack positional advantage, the UTG open-raising range is typically the tightest of all positions.

Range Composition

A typical tight-aggressive (TAG) player's UTG open-raising range comprises about 10%-15% of playable hands, mainly including:

  • High pairs: TT+ (about 2.5%)
  • High card suited/offsuit: AQo+, AJs+, KQs (about 3.5%)
  • Some medium pairs: 77-99 (about 2%)
  • Occasionally adding some suited connectors like T9s or JTs (about 1%) The actual range adjusts based on game dynamics, stack depth, and opponent tendencies. It can be slightly wider in deep-stacked situations and tighter when short-stacked.

Strategy Points

  • Defensive opening: Avoid opening with marginal hands since you are prone to 3-bets or multi-way calls.
  • Isolation and value: Use strong hands to raise and isolate, avoiding multi-way pots that reduce your win rate.
  • Range balancing: Occasionally open with speculative hands like suited connectors to prevent opponents from accurately reading your hand.

Influencing Factors

  • Stack depth: Deep-stacked allows adding more suited connectors; short-stacked means playing only strong hands.
  • Opponent style: Loosen up against tight opponents, tighten up against loose opponents.
  • Table image: With a tight image, you can occasionally steal blinds, but proceed cautiously in subsequent actions.
