Last Longer

Last Longer

A side bet or tournament format in which two or more players wager on who will survive longer in a poker tournament or session before being eliminated.

Definition

The Last Longer bet is a common informal wager in poker tournaments, particularly in sit-and-go (SNG) and multi-table tournament (MTT) settings. Players agree before the tournament starts that whoever is eliminated first (or last, depending on the terms) loses the bet. The loser pays the winner a predetermined amount, which is typically a fixed sum rather than a percentage of the prize pool.

Usage and Examples

Last Longer bets are often made between friends or regulars at a poker table. For instance, two players might agree to a $50 Last Longer: if one finishes in 10th place and the other in 5th, the player who finished 5th wins $50. If both are eliminated on the same hand, the bet is usually considered a tie, and no money changes hands, though some players may agree to split the bet or replay it.

A common variant is the "Last Longer Pool", where multiple players each contribute an equal amount to a side pot, and the survivor among them collects the entire pool. These pools can involve as few as two players or as many as an entire table. Some online poker platforms even offer formal Last Longer options as part of tournament registration.

Strategic Considerations

While Last Longer bets do not directly affect tournament strategy (they are side action), they can influence decision-making. For example, a player with a large Last Longer bet might be more inclined to avoid marginal situations early, preferring to outlast the opponent rather than risk elimination for a small chip gain. Conversely, a player who is far behind in chips might take more risks if they believe their opponent is likely to outlast them anyway. However, skilled players generally treat the bet as separate and maintain their optimal tournament strategy.
