Light 4-Bet Spot
Light 4-Bet Spot
Light 4-Bet Spot A preflop situation where you 4-bet with a non-strong hand e.g., a bluff or semi-bluff.
Overview
The Light 4-Bet Spot is a concept in Texas Hold'em preflop strategy. It refers to a situation where a player, after facing a 3-bet, makes a 4-bet not with value hands (such as AA, KK, etc.) but with weaker hands (such as Ax, small pairs, suited connectors). The purpose is to force the opponent to fold through a re-raise, or to gain information and control the pot.
Applicable Scenarios
- Position Advantage: Typically used when in position (e.g., on the button) facing a 3-bet from the blinds, as position provides more post-flop advantages.
- Opponent's Range is Wide: When the opponent's 3-bet range contains many bluff hands, a light 4-bet can punish their wide range.
- Effective Stack Depth: Around 100bb is typical; deeper or shallower stacks can affect effectiveness.
Strategy Points
- Choose Suitable Hand Types: Avoid pure garbage hands; instead, select hands with backdoor potential or blockers, such as A5s (blocks AA, AK) or small pairs (potential to hit sets).
- Manage Frequency: The proportion of light 4-bets should be low (e.g., 20-30% of total 4-bets), otherwise opponents can counter you easily.
- Follow-up Plan: Once called or 5-bet, you usually need to fold unless you have a specific read.
Example
Suppose you open-raise from the BTN with A♠5♠, and the SB 3-bets. At this point, you decide to light 4-bet to about 22bb, hoping to force the opponent to fold hands like ATo, KQo. If the opponent 5-bet shoves, you fold.
Notes
- Light 4-betting is not recommended in low-stakes games, because most players' 3-bet ranges are value-heavy.
- Adjust based on opponent tendencies: use it more against aggressive players, less against passive ones.
- Overusing it will make your range transparent and exploitable by skilled players.
