MP 150bb Steal
When holding about 150 big blinds in middle position MP, the act of raising to attempt to steal the blinds.
Overview
MP 150bb Steal refers to a strategy in 6-handed or 9-handed games where a player in Middle Position (MP, i.e., UTG+1 or +2) with an effective stack depth of approximately 150 big blinds (bb) opens for a raise in an attempt to steal the blinds or isolate the blind players. This term is commonly used in deep-stack (>100bb) cash games or late-stage tournaments when blind levels are high, making blind stealing a key profit source.
Strategic Considerations
- Position Advantage: MP is in the middle, with players in CO (Cutoff), BTN (Button), and the blinds still to act. Stealing requires assessing the defense ranges of players behind, especially the big blind. Typically, MP's stealing range should be wider than UTG (Under the Gun) but tighter than CO and BTN.
- Stack Depth: 150bb stack depth means players have enough chips for continuation bets and to counter re-steals, but must avoid difficult spots in large pots. Under deep stack conditions, the standard steal raise size is 2.5-3bb to balance risk and reward.
- Opponent Tendencies: Frequent stealing can be effective against tight-passive players, but caution is needed against loose-aggressive opponents who may re-raise or call and play postflop aggressively.
Example
Typical scenario: 9-handed, blinds 100/200, effective stacks 30,000 (150bb). MP holds A♠️9♦️ or K♠️J♠️, opens to 500-600, aiming to force the blinds to fold. If the big blind calls, the player can use position and range advantage to c-bet on the flop.
Notes
- Avoid overusing this strategy against aggressive opponents or those who frequently re-steal.
- If the big blind is a regular with a wide defense range, adjust stealing frequency and prepare for postflop play.
- In tournaments, consider ICM pressure. 150bb is usually deep, but stealing risk increases near the money bubble.
