MP 20bb Open Jam

In Texas Hold'em, refers to a strategy where a player in middle position MP with about 20 big blinds in chips directly chooses to go all-in as an open-raise strategy.

Overview

MP 20bb Open Jam is a common short-stack strategy in Texas Hold'em tournaments, applicable when the stack is around 20 big blinds and the player is in the middle position (MP). The core idea of this strategy is to apply pressure by going all-in, maximizing fold equity while avoiding complex post-flop decisions.

Position and Stack Depth

  • Middle Position (MP): Typically refers to UTG+1 on a 6-handed table or UTG+1 and UTG+2 on a 9-handed table, situated after the under-the-gun position and before the cutoff. In this position, 3–5 players are yet to act, and an all-in can cover part of the blinds' and subsequent positions' calling ranges.
  • 20 Big Blinds (bb): This is a typical "gray area" stack size in tournaments—an all-in generates enough fold equity, yet if called, the pot odds are still reasonable. Below 15bb, a direct shove is standard; above 25bb, a raise or limp is usually recommended.

Strategy Principles

  1. Fold Equity: The MP 20bb Open Jam exploits players' fear of elimination, forcing later players (especially the big blind) to fold weak or marginal hands, thus winning the pot uncontested.
  2. Range Polarization: The shoving range typically includes strong hands (e.g., TT+, AJ+) and some speculative hands (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors) to balance equity when called. Avoid marginal hands like KTo or QJo, as they are easily dominated.
  3. ICM Impact: Near the money bubble or final table, the frequency of open jams should decrease because short stacks are less inclined to call. However, if the stack is dangerously close to the blinds, aggression is still necessary.

Considerations

  • If later players have large stacks or are tight, they may call with medium hands, so adjust your range based on opponent tendencies.
  • Deep stacks (>30bb) are not recommended for open jamming, as it sacrifices potential value and invites wide calls.
  • In cash games, this strategy is usually not applicable because chips can be freely rebought and fold equity is lower.
