MP 25bb Bubble Play

Term: Middle Position 25 Big Blind Bubble Play MP 25bb Bubble Play During the tournament bubble phase, strategies and decision considerations for a middle position player holding approximately 25 big blinds.

Background and Positioning

MP (Middle Position) is the seat in the middle of a six- or nine-handed table, typically referring to UTG+1 or UTG+2 (depending on table size). 25bb (25 big blinds) is a medium stack depth, neither short nor deep, requiring careful handling during the bubble phase. The bubble phase is the stage of a tournament just before the money, where every hand can determine whether a player makes the payout.

Strategy Points

  • Open Raising Range: Due to ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure, MP should tighten its open range at 25bb depth. Typically use only medium-strength or better hands, such as ATo+, KQo+, 77+, and suited connectors like T9s+. Avoid risking marginal hands, as being called or re-raised could put you at a disadvantage.
  • Defending Against Re-raises: When facing a re-raise from later position or the blinds, MP’s defending range should lean more toward value hands rather than bluffs. For example, continue with TT+, AQ+, while folding medium pairs or suited connectors. A 25bb stack isn’t deep enough to apply much pressure, but it’s not so short that you’re being squeezed.
  • Stealing and Defending Blinds: In the bubble, MP should not frequently steal blinds, as the middle position still has several players yet to act. If tight-aggressive players are in later positions, stealing carries high risk. The better approach is to use positional advantage and post-flop skills.
  • All-in and Fold: When holding a strong hand and facing an opponent’s all-in, quickly calculate pot odds and ICM survival value. At 25bb depth, calling an all-in requires a hand with sufficient equity, typically TT+ or AQ+. Marginal hands like AJo or 99 should be approached with caution.

Common Mistakes

  • Overly Aggressive: Trying to apply pressure by open-raising from early position during the bubble can easily get you trapped by players in later positions.
  • Ignoring Stack Size: 25bb is a “foldable” depth; don’t risk your tournament life just to steal blinds.
  • Neglecting Opponent Image: If players in later positions are tight-aggressive, tighten your range; if they are looser, you can expand slightly.

Summary

The core of MP 25bb Bubble Play is balancing survival with chip accumulation. While ensuring entry into the money, look for opportunities through selective starting hands and solid post-flop play.
