MP 30bb 3-Bet Jam

MP 30bb 3-Bet Jam

Term: Middle Position 30 Big Blinds 3-Bet Jam MP 30bb 3-Bet Jam An aggressive strategy of using a 3-bet all-in when holding approximately 30 big blinds in middle position, facing a raise.

Overview

MP 30bb 3-Bet Jam is an aggressive play in Texas Hold'em for medium stack depths. Typically pre-flop, a player in middle position chooses to go all-in as a 3-bet when facing an open from early or middle position, rather than using a standard raise size. This strategy is common in the middle to late stages of tournaments or in short-stack cash game scenarios.

Strategy Principles

  • Stack Depth: About 30 big blinds is considered a medium stack. At this depth, a standard 3-bet (roughly 2.5-3x the raise) would make the pot already large, leaving little room for post-flop decisions. Shoving applies maximum pressure.
  • Range Advantage: Middle position has a narrower range than later positions, so a jam represents strong hands (e.g., TT+, AJ+) or balanced bluffs (e.g., A5s, KQs).
  • Fold Equity: If opponents have a tight calling range, the jam can win the pot immediately, accumulating chips.

Applicable Scenarios

  • The initial raiser has a wide range and high fold equity.
  • Players in the blinds are passive and unlikely to call the jam.
  • Holding hands that are easily dominated but playable (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors) – shoving avoids complex post-flop situations.

Cautions

  • Avoid using this when the raiser's range is very strong (e.g., they only open premium hands).
  • Adjust frequency based on opponent tendencies; overuse can be countered.
  • If the stack is below 25bb, the jam becomes a standard move; above 35bb, the jam may waste value.

Typical Example

Assume blinds 500/1000, MP has 30,000 chips (30bb). UTG opens to 2200, MP holds 99 and jams for 30,000. Goal: force UTG to fold hands like AT, KQ; if called, there is about 50% equity.
