MP 40bb Bubble Play

MP 40bb Bubble Play

Middle Position 40bb Bubble Play MP 40bb Bubble Play Strategic adjustments adopted by a player in middle position holding approximately 40 big blinds during the bubble phase of a tournament.

Overview

MP 40bb Bubble Play refers to the adjusted play of a player in middle position (MP) with approximately 40 big blinds of effective stack during the bubble phase of a poker tournament (i.e., when only a few eliminations remain before the money). This adjustment is based on ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure. At this stage, short-stacked players are desperate to survive, big stack players can apply pressure, and 40bb is a moderately large stack that requires careful balance between stealing blinds and protecting chips.

Key Strategy Points

  • Range Tightening: Due to ICM factors, the risk premium for all-ins or calls during the bubble is higher. The opening range from MP should generally be tighter than in cash games, around 15%-20% of premium hands (e.g., 77+, ATs+, KQo+), avoiding marginal hands to stay out of large pots.
  • Blind Stealing and Anti-Stealing: A 40bb stack allows pressure on later positions (especially small blind and big blind), but be mindful of opponents' stack sizes. Against short stacks (below 10bb) shoving, call with a wider range (e.g., A8s+, KJs+); against big stacks who re-raise, be cautious and fold if necessary.
  • Defending the Big Blind: As the big blind against an MP open, defend with about 25%-30% of hands (e.g., any pair, A-high, suited connectors), but avoid getting involved in large pots.
  • Avoid Large Pots: Unless holding very strong hands (AA, KK, AKs), avoid committing all-in post-flop. During the bubble, preserving chip safety is more important than winning small pots.

Example

Assume the bubble phase, MP with effective stack 40bb, opens to 2.5bb. Small blind short stack shoves for 8bb, big blind calls with 30bb. Here, the MP player holding a marginal hand like ATo should typically fold, because calling risks facing a potential squeeze from the big blind, and the opponent's shoving range is likely strong.
