MP River C-Bet

MP River C-Bet

Term: Middle Position River Continuation Bet MP River C-Bet Refers to a continuation bet made on the river by a player who raised preflop from middle position MP and entered the pot.

Overview

MP River C-Bet is a common betting pattern in Texas Hold'em, specifically referring to a player who raised preflop from middle position (MP) and then bets again on the river. This bet is usually a continuation of the flop and turn c-betting strategy, aimed at extracting value or bluffing.

Strategic Significance

Middle position is a relatively balanced position on the table. The preflop raising range typically includes strong hands (such as high pairs, AK, etc.) as well as some medium-strength or playable hands. When neither the flop nor the turn changes the hand strength expectation, a river c-bet can represent continued strength, forcing opponents to fold marginal hands or extracting value from worse hands.

Considerations

  • Opponent's Range: If the opponent calls the flop and turn bets, their range may include draws or medium-strength hands. If the river completes an obvious draw (such as a straight or flush), an MP River C-Bet should be cautious to avoid being check-raised as a bluff or losing to a made hand.
  • Board Texture: Is the river card related to the strong hands in the preflop raising range? For example, with a preflop raise of AK on an A-high board, continuing to bet on the river is for value; but on a small board where the opponent may have flopped a set, consider whether a bluff is appropriate.
  • Bet Sizing: Typically, river bet sizes are larger (e.g., 2/3 pot or more) to maximize value or apply pressure. However, the frequency of middle position c-bets should be balanced with GTO strategy to avoid being exploited.

Typical Scenario

Example: Preflop, MP raises with AhKh, Button calls. Flop Kc7d2s, MP bets, Button calls. Turn 8h, MP bets, Button calls. River 3c, MP continues betting. In this example, MP represents a very strong top pair through three consecutive bets, potentially extracting value from hands like KQ, KJ, but may also be countered by sets or made straights.

Notes

  • Avoid c-betting on every river; adjust based on opponent characteristics and board dynamics.
  • The middle position preflop range is wide; when c-betting on the river, consider your own range balance and appropriately include some bluff combinations.
  • When the pot is large, the success rate of river c-bet bluffs decreases; prioritize hands with blockers (such as those containing flush draw blockers) for bluffing.
