Nut High

“Nut high” is a term used primarily in high-low split poker games such as Omaha Hi-Lo or Stud Hi-Lo. It refers to the best possible high hand available based on the board (community cards) or upcards. Achieving the nut high means that no other player can have a higher-ranking high hand, though in split-pot games, a player can still win only half of the pot if someone else holds the nut low.

Usage in High-Low Games

In high-low split games, each pot is equally divided between the best high hand and the best low hand (if a low is possible). The nut high is the strongest high hand combination. For example, in Omaha Hi-Lo, if the board is A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠, the nut high is a royal flush (specifically A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠), which is unbeatable. In both Omaha and Stud Hi-Lo, the nut high is often a straight, flush, full house, or better.

Distinction from Nut Low

The nut low is the best possible low hand (usually A-2-3-4-5 or similar, with unpaired cards all 8 or lower in Omaha Hi-Lo). While the nut high is straightforward (the highest ranking hand), the nut low can sometimes be ambiguous due to different low rankings. Players often aim to win both halves of the pot (“scoop”) by holding both a nut high and a nut low draw.

Strategic Importance

Identifying the nut high is crucial for proper pot odds calculation, especially in split-pot games. If a player holds a non-nut high hand (e.g., the second-nut flush), they may be drawing dead against the nut high. In Omaha Hi-Lo, many players focus on hands that can make both a high and a low, but the nut high still commands respect when betting. In Stud Hi-Lo, the nut high can change quickly as cards are dealt, requiring careful observation.
