Pot Geometry is a bet sizing concept in no-limit hold'em that focuses on planning bets to create a pot size on a future street that naturally leads to an all-in bet of the remaining stack. The idea is that by betting a specific fraction of the pot on the flop or turn, the pot grows geometrically so that a bet on the next street matches the remaining stack. This is often used when a player has a strong hand and wants to get all-in by the river.
How It Works
A common geometric sizing is to bet about 2/3 to 3/4 of the pot on the flop, which makes the pot on the turn roughly equal to the remaining stack (or a fraction thereof), allowing a turn bet that also builds the pot for a river shove. For example, suppose the pot is 100 chips on the flop, and effective stacks are 300 chips. A pot-sized raise on the flop would be 100, making the pot 200 on the turn with 200 chips left. Then a pot-sized bet on the turn puts the rest all-in. But often the exact fraction depends on stack-to-pot ratio (SPR).
In practice, players might bet 3/4 pot on the flop when SPR is around 4, so that a turn bet of about 2/3 pot leaves a river shove of roughly the pot. The precise math depends on the number of streets remaining.
Practical Application
Pot Geometry is most relevant when you have a strong hand that you want to commit with, but you also want to deny proper odds to draws. By using geometric sizing, you ensure that your opponent cannot profitably call with draws over multiple streets, because the implied odds are limited. For instance, if you bet small on the flop, the turn pot might be too small to force a mistake, or if you bet too large, you might scare away action. Geometric betting finds a balance.
Limitations
Pot Geometry is a guideline, not a rule. It assumes you are committed to the hand and that your opponent will call. In practice, bet sizing varies based on opponent tendencies, board texture, and range considerations. It is most useful when your hand is strong enough to want to get all-in, but you also want to extract maximum value without giving cheap draws.
