SB on Rainbow Board

Refers to the situation and strategic considerations for the small blind player on a rainbow board flop with three different suits.

Meaning

In Texas Hold'em, "SB on Rainbow Board" refers to the situation where the player in the Small Blind (SB) faces a flop with three cards of different suits (i.e., a rainbow board). A rainbow board usually means the possibility of a flush draw is low, so the drawing structure on the flop is relatively simple, mainly involving straight draws, pairs, or high cards.

Position and Range

Small Blind is the first to act preflop, but after the flop, the small blind acts last on the flop (if no one raises) or earlier (if someone bets). On a rainbow board, the small blind's range usually includes many unimproved hands (like high cards or small to medium pairs), as well as some made pairs or draws. Due to being out of position (acting first on every subsequent street), the small blind needs to handle marginal hands carefully.

Strategic Considerations

  • Continuation Bet: If the small blind raised preflop, a rainbow flop often is suitable for a continuation bet with high pairs, top pairs, or strong draws, because rainbow boards have fewer draws overall, and opponents' fold equity is higher.
  • Check-Raise: When the small blind checks and an opponent bets, the small blind can check-raise with strong hands, or use the dry nature of the rainbow board to check-raise bluff with some draws or middle pairs.
  • Range Advantage: Rainbow boards usually favor the preflop raiser, because their range contains more high card combinations that can hit top pair or overpair; while the small blind as the preflop caller (if not raising) has a weaker range and needs to be more cautious against the opponent's continuation bets.

Example

Suppose the flop is K♠ 7♦ 2♣ (rainbow board). The small blind holds A♠ Q♠, checks the flop, and the opponent bets. At this point, the small blind has missed the board but has two overcards, and may consider calling or raising as a bluff, depending on the read of the opponent's range. If the small blind holds 7♠ 5♠ (a pair of sevens), on a rainbow board the opponent might have Kx, so the small blind can check-raise for value or information.

Summary

"SB on Rainbow Board" emphasizes the small blind's decisions under a specific flop structure. The core is to exploit the low drawing potential of a rainbow board to balance value and bluffs, while managing the disadvantage of being out of position.
