Term Description

[UTG+1] 40bb [Resteal] describes a specific preflop strategy scenario. [UTG+1] is the first position after the under-the-gun ([UTG]) seat, which is an early position. 40bb refers to a stack depth of approximately 40 big blinds, which is a medium stack. [Resteal] refers to "re-stealing the blinds," meaning the player expects the opponent’s initial raise to be a blind steal and therefore counters by [3-betting] (re-raising) to either win the pot outright or take the initiative after the flop.

Strategic Principles

In Texas Hold’em, [stack depth] influences strategic choices. A 40bb stack gives the player enough chips to [3-bet] and still continue playing postflop, but it’s also not too deep to widen the range too much. [UTG]+1 is already an early position, but compared to UTG its range can be slightly wider. When a player judges that an opponent’s (especially from late position) raising range is weak, using a resteal can counter the opponent’s blind-stealing attempt.

Typical Situations

  • When an opponent on the button or in the hijack raises first, and the player in UTG+1 holds medium hands (e.g., [A9s], [KQo]) or low pairs, they may consider a 3-[bet] resteal.
  • With 40bb chips, the 3-[bet] size is typically around 10–12bb, giving the opponent unfavorable pot odds to call.
  • The player must balance their raising range to avoid being called or [4-bet] too widely.

Risks and Considerations

The risk of a [UTG+1 resteal] is that if the opponent holds a strong hand (e.g., [QQ]+ or AK), the player can be in a difficult spot. Additionally, a resteal from early position reveals hand strength and becomes exploitable by later players. Therefore, this strategy should be used cautiously, adapting to opponent tendencies and table dynamics.
