UTG+1 River 3-Bet Pot
UTG+1 River 3-Bet Pot
e., someone bets, someone raises, and then re-raises).
Position and Situation
UTG+1 (Under the Gun +1) is the second position to the right of the UTG position, and is one of the early positions in a full nine-handed table. A player raising from this position preflop indicates a relatively strong starting hand while being out of position. When the pot reaches the river and a 3-Bet occurs, it means the action on the river is: one player bets, another raises, and then someone re-raises (i.e., 3-bets).
Typical Range and Reasoning
- Preflop UTG+1 Raising Range: Typically includes AA, KK, QQ, AK, and depending on the player's style, some small to medium pocket pairs or suited connectors.
- Hand Strength Implication of a River 3-Bet: On the river, a 3-Bet usually indicates an extremely strong hand (such as the nuts or near-nuts), or occasionally a bluff (rare, as it requires multiple raises). Since UTG+1 is out of position, their river 3-Bet is more value-oriented than bluff-oriented, and requires the opponent to have a wide range.
Strategic Considerations
- UTG+1 Player: If holding a strong hand on the river (e.g., top full house, nut flush after a preflop raise), they can either bet directly or check-raise. If the opponent bets and then gets raised by another player, a 3-Bet should only be used with hands that can beat the opponent's raising range.
- Responder: Facing a river 3-Bet from UTG+1, one should typically only call with the nuts or an extremely strong hand; for ordinary strong hands (e.g., top pair top kicker), folding should be considered, as UTG+1's early position raising range is inherently tighter.
Note
This term describes a specific line of action rather than a specific hand. In practice, a river 3-Bet is uncommon because it involves three actions, and the pot is already large, making bluffing extremely costly.
