Term Analysis

UTG (Under the Gun) refers to the first action position preflop, typically two seats to the left of the button on a nine-handed table. This position has the least information and the tightest range.

100bb (100 big blinds) indicates a stack depth of approximately 100 big blinds, which falls into the deep stack range. This allows for high playability postflop but also involves significant variance.

ICM (Independent Chip Model) is a model used in tournaments to evaluate the actual value of chips, considering prize ladder and elimination risk. Under ICM pressure, the marginal value of chips decreases, and survival becomes more important than accumulating chips.

Typical Strategy

  • Starting Hand Range: In UTG position, only about 10%-15% of strong hands are typically played (e.g., AA-99, AK, AQ, etc.). Under ICM pressure, the range should be further tightened to avoid getting involved in large pots.
  • Raise Sizing: Usually raise to 2.2-2.5bb, applying pressure with deep stacks while controlling the pot.
  • Facing a 3-bet: In ICM situations, prefer to fold against opponents' 3-bets unless holding top-tier hands (e.g., KK+).
  • Postflop Play: With deep stacks, focus on pot control and avoid committing too many chips with marginal made hands. Under ICM, prioritize protecting chips over pursuing thin value.

Notes

At a 100bb depth under ICM, it is a medium-risk scenario that requires balancing aggression and defense. However, specific decisions also depend on factors such as tournament stage, opponent type, blind structure, etc. The example does not account for actual opponent tendencies and is for reference only.
