UTG 50bb Resteal

UTG 50bb Resteal

A strategy where a player in the UTG under the gun position with about 50 big blinds makes a 3-bet resteal against a late position player's blind steal raise.

Position and Stack Background

UTG is the first to act preflop and is typically associated with a strong range. 50 big blinds (bb) is a medium stack depth, common in tournaments, where players have enough chips to apply pressure but must also be cautious to avoid losses.

Strategic Scenario

If the UTG player chooses to limp or fold, and then a later position player (e.g., CO, BTN) raises, that raise may be considered a steal. In this case, the UTG player can 3-bet to resteal, i.e., re-raise, to capture dead money and force the opponent to fold. This strategy typically uses a wider range, including some strong hands and medium hands, leveraging positional disadvantage but stack advantage.

Considerations

  • The resteal frequency must be balanced; overuse can be detected and countered by opponents.
  • If the later position player's raising range is very strong, restealing carries higher risk.
  • In tournaments, ICM factors must be considered, especially near the money bubble.

Typical Example

Assume blinds are 100/200, UTG player has 10,000 chips (50bb) and limps. BTN player raises to 600. UTG player chooses to 3-bet to 1800 as a resteal.
