UTG Fold to Steal

UTG Fold to Steal

Usually expressed as a percentage.

Overview

UTG (Under the Gun) refers to the position that acts first preflop (immediately left of the big blind). Fold to Steal is the frequency with which a player folds when facing a raise (steal) from a late-position player (such as CO or button) in an unopened pot. This statistic is commonly tracked by poker analysis software (e.g., Hold'em Manager, PokerTracker) and is used to evaluate a player's tight-passive tendencies in early position.

Calculation

UTG Fold to Steal = (Number of times the player folds to a steal raise from UTG) / (Total number of times they face a steal raise) × 100%. A typical sample size of at least 100 encounters is recommended to avoid small-sample bias.

Strategic Significance

  • High fold rate (e.g., above 80%): Indicates the player is overly cautious from UTG, making them vulnerable to frequent steals by later-position opponents. Opponents can widen their stealing range to exploit the blinds.
  • Low fold rate (e.g., below 30%): Suggests the player frequently defends from UTG, potentially with a wide range of calls or reraises. Opponents should be more cautious when stealing and choose stronger hands to raise.
  • Balanced range: In Game Theory Optimal (GTO) play, UTG should have a reasonable fold rate against steals, consistent with their preflop range and exploitative strategy against later positions.

Influencing Factors

  • Position disadvantage: UTG is the most disadvantaged postflop position, so the fold rate is typically higher than from other early positions.
  • Table dynamics: If late-position opponents are aggressive, the fold rate may increase to avoid risk; if opponents are tight-passive, the player can lower their fold rate and enter the pot more often.
  • Stack depth: With short stacks, the fold rate may rise because defending is more costly; with deep stacks, the player can expand their defending range.

Notes

This statistic should be analyzed in conjunction with other metrics such as VPIP and PFR. For example, a tight-aggressive player (VPIP 12-15%, PFR 10-13%) typically has a UTG Fold to Steal in the 55-65% range, which is considered reasonable. However, individual playing style and table environment can significantly alter this number, so it should not be interpreted in isolation.
