UTG River Delayed C-Bet Rainbow

UTG River Delayed C-Bet on Rainbow Flop

Term Explanation

Components

The term consists of four core parts:

  • [UTG] (Under the Gun): The first position to act preflop, usually with a tight range.
  • [Delayed C-Bet]: A delayed continuation bet – no bet on the flop, no bet on the turn, only betting on the river.
  • River: The final community card is dealt, leaving only one round of betting.
  • [Rainbow]: The flop shows three cards of different suits, eliminating the possibility of a flush draw.

Strategic Background

This line is common when both players check the flop and turn (or there is only one [check-call]). The UTG player uses their range advantage on the river to value bet or bluff. A [rainbow board] means no flush draws exist, so the river bet focuses on pairs, two pair, or better hands, as well as bluffs representing those hands.

Action Logic

  • Flop: The UTG player, as the preflop raiser, usually has a range advantage but may choose to check (e.g., if the flop is very wet and susceptible to raises, or their own hand is weak and they want to control the pot).
  • Turn: Continue checking, possibly because the turn didn't improve their hand, or to induce a river bet from the opponent.
  • River: On a rainbow flop, if the river is a blank (no straight or flush possible), the UTG's delayed [C-Bet] can represent either a strong made hand (like top pair or better) or a complete bluff. Since the rainbow board reduces the opponent's drawing range and the preflop raiser still retains a strong range image, the bet often forces the opponent to fold medium-strength hands.

Example

Suppose the flop is K♠ 7♦ 3♣ (rainbow). UTG holds A♠K♣ and raises preflop. They check the flop. The turn is 2♥, both check. The river is Q♠, UTG bets about two-thirds of the pot. This is a classic delayed [C-Bet], extracting value with top pair top kicker.

Notes

  • A [rainbow flop] is favorable for this play; if the flop allows a flush draw, the credibility of a delayed [C-Bet] decreases (because the opponent might hold a draw).
  • The UTG player's range typically includes many high cards, which are more likely to form strong hands (like [top pair]) on a rainbow flop, making the delayed [C-Bet] more representative.
