Humberto Brenes

Humberto Brenes was born on May 8, 1951, in San Jose, Costa Rica. He became one of the most recognizable figures in poker, known for his bright tracksuits, visor, and distinctive eyewear. Before turning professional, Brenes developed a passion for the game that would lead him to become a pioneer for Costa Rican poker on the international stage. He has credited his mentor and coach, Andrés "El Pemorado" Calderón, for his development as a player.

Brenes made his mark at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) early in his career. In 1988, he finished fourth in the WSOP Main Event, earning $83,050. He went on to win two WSOP bracelets in 1993: one in $2,500 Limit Hold'em for $149,000 and another in $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha for $128,000. Over the years, he has amassed 99 WSOP cashes (according to some records), including 23 final tables. In 2006, he tied with Phil Hellmuth Jr. for the most money finishes at that year's WSOP, with eight cashes. He also finished 36th in the 2006 Main Event ($329,865) and 83rd in the 2007 Main Event ($82,476), setting a record for the most Main Event players outlasted over two years (15,012). His total WSOP winnings exceed $2.3 million.

Brenes has also enjoyed success on the World Poker Tour (WPT). His best WPT result came in 2004 when he finished runner-up in the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Bellagio, earning $923,475. Later that same year, he placed third in the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods for $636,930. In 2002, he won the Jack Binion World Poker Open, defeating Erik Seidel heads-up for $502,460. He has made three WPT final tables and accumulated over $1.75 million in WPT earnings. In 2011, he finished fifth in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Super High Roller for $200,000. His total live tournament earnings stand at over $6.2 million, making him the all-time money leader from Costa Rica.

Brenes is known for an aggressive and creative playing style, often applying pressure post-flop and using large bluffs. His table image is enhanced by his flamboyant appearance: he frequently wears two pairs of glasses at once, a visor, and bright tracksuits. He uses a toy shark as a card protector, a prop that gave him the nickname "The Shark." He is a relentless self-promoter, often singing during hands and using the shark to taunt opponents, which keeps him in the camera's focus. Despite his exuberance, he maintains emotional control and channels his energy strategically. Brenes's distinctive look and antics have made him a fan favorite and a regular feature on televised poker.

Brenes is considered a pioneer for Latin American poker, having inspired a generation of players. He is a longtime member of Team PokerStars and has represented the brand internationally. Two of his brothers, Alex Brenes and Eric Brenes, have also won World Poker Tour titles, highlighting a successful poker family. Brenes holds the record for the most WSOP Main Event players outlasted over consecutive years (2006-2007) and has been honored with a $6 million milestone award. As of 2025, he remains active in tournaments, with recent cashes including a 557th-place finish in the 2025 WSOP $1,000 Seniors event. His career earnings and longevity cement his legacy as one of the most iconic figures in poker.

One of the most memorable hands in Brenes's career occurred at the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event. With approximately 1,500,000 in chips, Brenes raised to 85,000 from early position, holding A♥ K♥. Hevad Khan re-raised to 205,000, and Brenes moved all-in. Khan instantly called with pocket aces (A♠ A♦?). The board ran out 3♠ 5♠ K♠ 4♦ 10♠, giving Khan an ace-high flush and eliminating Brenes in 83rd place. This finish, however, set a WSOP record for the most Main Event players outlasted over a two-year span (2006-2007), totaling 15,012.

Brenes has been a long-standing member of Team PokerStars, playing under the screen name "HumbertoB." He has represented the site in numerous online and live events, leveraging his colorful persona to engage with fans worldwide. His online activities complement his live tournament career, though his most significant achievements have come at physical tables.

Brenes continued to compete in the 2022-2025 period. In the 2022 WSOP, he cashed in two events: a 355th-place finish in the $800 No-Limit Hold'em Deepstack Eight Max ($1,282) and an 84th-place finish in the $1,979 Poker Hall of Fame Bounty Freezeout ($3,903). In 2023, he placed 434th in the $1,000 Super Seniors event ($1,600) and 2,264th in the $1,000 Mystery Millions Bounty ($1,061). Most recently, in the 2025 WSOP, he finished 557th in the $1,000 Seniors event for $2,447, demonstrating his enduring participation in the game.
