25bb Resteal

25bb Resteal

A strategy of re-raising against an opponent's raise when the stack depth is around 25 big blinds, aiming to capture the blinds and dead money.

Overview

The 25bb Resteal is a common counter-strategy in Texas Hold'em, applicable when the stack depth is around 25 big blinds (approximately 20-30bb range). At this point, the player is in a short-to-medium stack state and re-raises to counter an opponent's steal attempt. The core of this strategy lies in using the threat of an all-in that comes with this stack depth to force the opponent to fold.

Applicable Scenarios

Key Execution Points

  1. Raise Size: Usually raise to 2.5-3 times the opponent's raise, or go all-in directly (depending on the opponent's raise size and stack depth). All-in maximizes fold equity.
  2. Range Balancing: Mix value hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) and bluff hands to avoid being easily exploited by the opponent.
  3. Consider Opponent Tendencies: If the opponent frequently calls or re-raises, reduce the Resteal frequency.

Risks and Adjustments

  • Being Called or Re-Raised: If the opponent has a strong hand, they may call or re-raise, putting the restealer at a disadvantage.
  • Chip Management: At 25bb depth, one failed Resteal can significantly dent the stack. It is advisable to use it only when the opponent's range is clearly weak.

Example

Assume blinds 100/200, big blind holds 10,000 chips (50bb), button raises to 500 (2.5bb). If the big blind chooses to Resteal, they can raise to 1200-1500 or go all-in. If holding a medium pair, going all-in can force the opponent to fold.

Summary

The 25bb Resteal is an important component of Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategy, but in practice it must be flexibly applied based on opponent data and one's own range.
